What to watch when a tattoo heals in heat, sun or around holiday plans.

A fresh tattoo should stay out of direct sun
During healing, a tattoo is sensitive recovering skin. Direct sun can increase irritation, slow healing and damage pigment before the result has settled.
Until the tattoo is healed, do not tan it and do not rely on SPF. Sunscreen belongs on healed skin, not fresh work.
Swimming and sauna can wait
Pools, sea, baths and sauna increase the risk of irritation and infection. For the first two weeks, avoid them and follow the exact advice you receive after the session.
Showering is fine, but avoid long soaking, perfumed products and rubbing with a towel.
Protect pigment after healing
Once healed, protect tattoos in summer with good SPF and clothing. Sun exposure is one of the main reasons lines and colours fade over time.
If you are planning a seaside holiday, it is usually smarter to book the tattoo after you return or leave enough time before the trip.
