Not everything can be covered with a small design
A cover-up is not simply placing a new picture on top of an old one. The new pigment must visually work with the old pigment, so the final design is often larger, darker or compositionally stronger.
The darker and denser the old tattoo is, the less freedom the new design has. Light, faded or sparse work is easier to cover.
Why consultation matters
A consultation checks age, colour, pigment depth, scarring, placement and the style you want. Sometimes lightening part of the old tattoo with laser first is the better path.
Send a daylight photo of the old tattoo, a photo from farther away to show placement and a few references for the new direction.
Realistic expectations are everything
A good cover-up should feel like an intentional tattoo, not a compromise. That is why it often uses movement, contrast and naturally darker areas.
If you want a fine minimalist design over a dark old tattoo, laser or a different strategy may be better than risking a muddy result.
